How to Be a Morning Person

August 10, 2017 Kelsey Erickson
morningevermecoaching

For those of you who have been following along on my blog long enough, you know that I wrote about this topic earlier this year (check it out here). I spent the month of January experimenting with my morning routine. For years, my gut has told me (begged me) to figure out a better morning routine.

January was a great month. I was waking up earlier than I ever had before, getting my morning workouts in and felt like I had finally figured it out.

I hadn't.

February came along and I'd talk myself into one day a week of sleeping in. Then in March, the slope got slipperier. By April, I had totally lost the whole routine. I was exhausted from finishing up my coaching certification and, oh yeah, neck deep in wedding planning.

June was a really cool month for me because I totally redesigned my weekly schedule so that I could focus on Everme, first, and any other work or responsibilities, second. While I did have more control over my time, and my time was aligned with my top priorities, there was still a nag to figure out my mornings.

Then, like always, when you need a teacher most, they appear. One of my clients recommended I read the book The Miracle Morning. I was skeptical but thought I'd give it a shot because my gut wouldn't leave me alone until I figured this out.

Now I'm a self-declared morning person.

If you're skeptical, or convinced you'll *never* be a morning person, I encourage you to read this book.

Here's how The Miracle Morning helped me become a morning person and why you need to read this book:

I don’t want to resist my life

The author, Hal Elrod, shares that when you continuously hit snooze, you are essentially telling the universe that you aren't excited for your life.  The last thing that I want to do with my life is resist it. This perspective shift made all the difference in setting out to achieve my miracle morning routine. Before I even finished the book, I decided I would commit to completing the routine for at least 30 days. I'm pleased to report that I am now successfully 40+ days into this new routine.

I could fill my mornings with stuff I like to do

I read 7 books in the month of July (reading is one of the morning activities built in to the miracle morning routine). I was able to actually enjoy my coffee vs. chugging it down so I could hurry up and get to work. I prayed more in July than I ever have in my entire life. I started and ended my day with God in a way I never thought possible. I ran more miles, farther distances and faster paces than I have since last November. I had tobuild in an "off" day for my workouts instead of in the past when it was more about building in "on" days. I have more to give and share with the world every day because I've already taken care of myself.

The amount of sleep we think we need is choice

I used to be adamant that I needed at least 8 hours of sleep a night. With my new routine, I'm getting around 6-7 hours. And you know what? I'm not that tired! Even on a 6 hour night, I'm choose to wake up and treat my day like the gift that it is.

I learned how to incorporate affirmations + prayer + visualizations into my life

Part of the miracle morning routine involves daily affirmations, silence (prayers) and visualizations. I loved the concept but knew I would have to put my own spin on it somehow. I learned to combine all three of them into one. I have affirmations that I read through every morning, then I pray about those same affirmations and then I visualize what I most desire out of those things. All three practices are centered around just 5 things: my faith, my body, my marriage, what I bring to the world and how I bring it to the world.

You need to read this book because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

What if you had an extra hour in your day? What could be possible? What would you use the time for? I am speaking from experience, and in the words of one of my clients, what is that extra hour or extra snooze time aka FAKE SLEEP going to do for you? Not a whole lot. But, taking control of your day, setting your morning up right has the power to change the rest of your day. You will be more present. You will be more engaged at work and with your family. You will feel proud of having taken care of yourself FIRST.

If you're ready to check this book out, leave a comment below or message me directly (kelsey@evermecoaching.com). I'll send the first person to do so a copy - a gift from me to you! If you're like, nah, books aren't for me, but would still like to take over your morning routine, message me anyway! There's so much more I can share with you, such as:

  • How to complete your own 30 day miracle morning trial
  • How to write affirmations, prayers or visualizations
  • How to reset your mind about how much sleep you need
  • How to know if you're resisting your life

You deserve to have an amazing morning, every morning. You can do this!
